About 2014 Kiwi Treasures Silver Specimen Coin

The third instalment in our iconic 'Kiwi Treasures' coin series is here. The 2014 Kiwi Treasures coin combines the kiwi with Mitre Peak - the most prominent and well known feature of Milford Sound.

Issue Information

The kiwi and Mitre Peak are the heroes of this, the third in the Kiwi Treasures coin series, which links our national bird with icons of our culture, heritage and natural environment.

Whether it’s to be a new addition to your collection or a gift for someone special in your life, it’s sure to delight for many years to come.

Named more than 150 years ago for its resemblance to a bishop’s headdress (mitre), Mitre Peak is the most prominent and well known feature of Milford Sound – a natural wonder at the southwest of New Zealand’s South Island.

Located on the south shore of the fiord, this awe-inspiring mountain rises dramatically to 1,692 metres above the water, to a summit that actually comprises five individual peaks. It’s a ‘must see’ for tourists from New Zealand and around the world and, for those prepared to tackle the challenge, a demanding but hugely rewarding climb.

Every year, Milford Sound (called ‘Piopiotahi’ in Māori) attracts up to a million visitors – all drawn to its pristine landscapes, remote, rugged beauty and diverse marine life, which includes seals, dolphins, penguins and the occasional whale.

The three Kiwi Treasures – Mitre Peak coins capture the Peak in all its glory, with three unfurling fern fronds (koru) swirling around it to represent the realm of Tāwhirimātea (God of the Winds). In the foreground stands the kiwi, while behind it are two tightly curled fern fronds (piko) to symbolise new beginnings, and a fully grown fern leaf that represents positivity and growth.
