About 2020 Maui and the First Dog - Maui raua ko Irawaru Silver Coin Set

Irawaru was married to Māui’s younger sister, Hinauri. Irawaru was a great hunter and fisherman and, as they shared similar interests, the brothers-in-law soon became friends. Everything Māui would prepare for their expeditions Irawaru was able to copy, sometimes improving on the nets and traps they would use to hunt and gather food. One day as Māui and Irawaru were preparing to go fishing together, Māui began fashioning his hinaki (eel pot) so that the fish he trapped wouldn’t be able to escape. Irawaru copied Māui’s hinaki, but made his bigger and weaved an elaborate pattern to strengthen the trap. Māui was jealous and soon became angry. He did not appreciate Irawaru trying to better him. As Irawaru was occupied with making his hinaki, he didn’t notice Māui standing over him reciting an incantation under his breath. By the time he looked up it was too late - Māui’s hands were glowing with power. The light surround Irawaru, contorting his body until finally all that was left was a long-haired dog. That night, Māui returned home without Irawaru. Hinauri new straight away that her trickster brother Māui and done something unspeakable to her husband. After much quarrelling, Māui told Hinauri what he had done. Hinauri raced out into the night and found Irawaru howling to the Moon. The sight of this broke Hinauri’s heart. Inconsolable, she cast herself into the sea, never to be seen again. The first coin in this set depicts an enraged Māui using his divine powers to transform his brother-in-law into a beast – the first dog of New Zealand. The second coin shows a forlorn Irawaru transformed into a dog, and his wife, Māui’s sister Hinauri, crying at the loss of her husband. Both coins are embellished with unique koru designs. The coins are minted to the highest proof quality to showcase the finest details in the design.
