About Anniversaries – Personalities (I)

Romfilatelia, the specialized company in issuing and trading philatelic items in Romania, releases the first part of the postal stamp series marking the anniversary of important Romanian and foreign personalities. The four stamps are dedicated to the following personalities:

Anghel Saligny (1854 – 1925), Romanian civil engineer and scientist, member of the Romanian Academy, whose image is illustrated on the stamp with the face value of 4,000 Lei (ROL). His most important work is the Cernavoda Bridge over the Danube River, which was, at that time, the longest construction in Europe, featuring relevant innovations in the construction of bridges;

Gheorghe Anghel (1904 – 1966), Romanian sculptor considered to be on of the most important creative artists of Romania. His image is illustrated on the stamp with the face value of 16,000 Lei (ROL). He created an art of great spirituality, dedicated to humanity. With his special gift of bringing clay or bronze to life, the artist embodied the essence of mankind with honesty and sober greatness;

George Sand (1804 – 1876), by her true name Aurore Dupin, is illustrated on the stamp with the face value of 21,000 Lei (ROL). The nonconformist French author was a prominent figure in the literary life of the 19th century. Her works are dominated by thematic or ideological considerations, as are her semi-autobiographical works that studied the iniquitous position of women in the 19th century society;

Oscar Wilde (1854 – 1900), the famous Irish poet and dramatist, whose reputation rests on his comic masterpieces, is depicted on the stamp with the face value of 31,000 Lei (ROL). He was a spokesman for the late 19th century Aesthetic Movement in England, which advocated “art for art’s sake”.
