About Civic Values - Amnesty International

Amnesty International is a global movement of more than 10 million members, activists and supporters fighting for a just and free humanity in which all people live in dignity and fully enjoy human rights universally recognized by the United Nations. The tools to achieve this are the power of people and the strength of thousands of individual actions with a common goal.

Independent of any political ideology or religious creed, and present today in almost every country in the world, Amnesty International was founded by the British lawyer Peter Benenson in 1961.

Amnesty International conducts rigorous investigations into human rights abuses in different parts of the world, giving victims a voice, exposing these abuses publicly and campaigning to put pressure on those who have it in their power to change things.

Amnesty International works for the right to truth, justice and reparation for victims of serious abuses, such as unfair trials, enforced disappearances, arbitrary detentions, extrajudicial executions or gender-based violence. It defends refugees, displaced persons or victims of trafficking, and the civilian population in armed conflicts. It also campaigns for the right to health and sexual and reproductive rights, and fights against torture and ill-treatment, for the abolition of the death penalty, and for effective control over the arms trade. The protection of the right of all people to express themselves freely and not suffer discrimination is another of the organization's hallmarks.

In Spain, Amnesty International has almost 100,000 members who, with their generosity, give the organization the necessary independence to work with full autonomy and impartiality, since it does not accept subsidies from governments or political parties to carry out its research work and bells.

The stamp that Correos dedicates to Amnesty International includes the illustration made by the artist 72KILOS for the 60th anniversary of the organization celebrated in 2021.
