About Numismatics, Xacobeo 21-22

The numismatic series issues a stamp that reproduces a coin, generally commemorative, which has been issued by the National Mint and Stamp Factory.

In this case, both the coin and the stamp pay homage to Xacobeo 21-22.

The coin has a face value of 30 euros. On the obverse appears the effigy of Their Majesties the King and Queen of Spain and on the reverse an allegorical image of the Camino with a pilgrim and the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela.

The stamp issued for the occasion reproduces the reverse of it.

The Holy Year of Compostela is a moment of great importance for believers and non-believers, being the culminating point of everything that the Camino de Santiago itself represents.

Its origin dates back to the late medieval period, when it was established that the Holy Year of Compostela would be the one in which July 25 (the feast of the Apostle Santiago) corresponds to a Sunday. This fact happens a total of 14 times each century.

The Xacobeo 21-22 represents the great cultural, social and tourist dynamism that is generated around an event of this magnitude, considering itself as a great opportunity to materialize and disseminate the noble values of the Camino de Santiago, also promoting its role as a regenerating factor Of the territory. It should be noted that the Xacobeo Year 21-22 is typified as an event of exceptional public interest.

The Jubilee Year of Compostela lasts twelve months, beginning on December 31 of the previous year with the opening of the Holy Door and extending over the following twelve months. This period represents an opportunity for spiritual renewal and purification.

On this occasion, there is an exception, since the Xacobeo year will extend throughout 2021 and 2022, due to the global pandemic caused by COVID 19. This peculiarity also occurred during the Spanish Civil War.
