About Andorran Diversity - Indian Community

The Principality of Andorra is a country with high rates of population born outside its borders; in fact, it is the country in Europe where this index is highest, since 65.9% of its population is born abroad.

In total, 120 different nationalities coexist in Andorra, and the Indian community at the level of demographic weight is currently the eighteenth nationality, with a total of 59 members.

India gained its independence from British rule on August 15, 1947. The expulsion of the British, driven by Mahatma Gandhi's non-violence movement, however, triggered, with the partition of the Indian subcontinent, a massive exodus of Hindus and Muslims to both sides. of the border that degenerated into attacks against minorities, leaving up to a million dead in its wake. A conflict that is not closed.

The watercolor that illustrates the seal refers to India's 75 years of independence from the United Kingdom and the wheel that appears on its flag. The wheel symbolizes justice and progress towards independence through peaceful change. His name is Chakrá Ashoka and he is the wheel of dharma justice in the Lions Capital of Sarnath. It also has 24 peaks that represent the hours of the day.

In 2019 in Spain two stamps dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the birth of Mahatma Gandhi and the centenary of Indira Gandhi were issued, both watercolors by the same artist Paula Lòpez-Berges who in this 2022 has made this stamp for the Principat d'Andorra.
