About 75 Years of Pif - Philatelic Document

Pif the dog was born on March 28, 1948 (in reality he appeared on March 26 in the daily newspaper which announced his first Strip on the 28th) under the pencil of the Spaniard José Cabrero Arnal, to the rhythm of a daily Strip published in the newspaper l'Humanité, created by Jean Jaurès.

Pif will end up giving his name to Vaillant magazine, a veritable melting pot of French-speaking comics. Arnal, the father of Pif the dog and also of the cat Hercule, of the no less famous Placid, the bear and Muzo the fox, of the happy goat, Roudoudou, but also of many other characters created in Spain, France and even in Romania, is one of the major authors of French and European comics.

Mircea Arapu, the designer of the 75th anniversary stamp, knew the master and was to be one of the pioneers of the Pif adventure of the 80s: “As to bring the new illustrations I dragged more than before in the editorial staff, towards the end of the year, I was called to participate in the imminent change of formula. One evening, I stayed there and following the instructions of the decision makers, I drew Pif for the first Pif sans Gadget, last issue of 1985.

A cover with the image of a wrapping paper touted the new formula. That was, on page 3, the setup for the real coverage to come. To compensate for the disappearance of the gadget, it wanted to be as eye-catching as a promotion on a packet of washing powder. For me, on the other hand, it was a happy opportunity to produce a large number of illustrations with Pif and his friends. »
