About 1025–2025 Millennium of Caen

On June 30, 2025, La Poste issued a block of one stamp and a philatelic souvenir to mark the millennium of the city of Caen, located in Calvados.

In 1025, Caen entered history.

It was on this date that we find the first written mention of a town then called Cadomus. The Norman city then flourished under the reign of William the Conqueror. In a few years, between 1050 and 1060, he built the castle and two great abbeys, the Abbaye-aux-Hommes and the Abbaye aux Dames.

Over a thousand years, the city's history is marked by several important dates.

1066 William of Normandy becomes King of England after winning the Battle of Hastings.

1432 The University of Caen is founded, one of the first in Europe. 1562 During the Wars of Religion, the tombs of William and Matilda were looted.

1793 The castle was condemned to destruction, but only the keep and Saint-Pierre Gate were damaged.

1857 Inauguration of the Caen Canal, which connects the port to the sea, contributing to modern maritime trade.

1944 Bombings partially destroyed the city. D-Day, however, remains a symbol of freedom.

1957 The university was rebuilt on the model of American-style campuses.

2016 Caen became the regional capital.

2025 The completion of the castle's greening project marked the city's millennium anniversary. In 2025, Caen will celebrate its Millennium with more than 250 events to highlight the richness of its heritage, its artistic and scientific culture, revealing a city that combines past, present and future with audacity and optimism.
