About Luxembourg Mushrooms

The Grand Duchy of Luxembourg is an ideal breeding ground for mushrooms. Its humid and temperate climate allows an impressive number of over 2,500 different types to exist in our countryside. Without these mushrooms, our forests would be suff ocated by their own organic matter. They take care of a good part of organic waste recycling, as well as helping with the absorption of the minerals that plants and trees need. The variety in their shapes, flavours, colours and even their toxicity has always fascinated mankind.

FERNAND SCHILTZ (born in 1962) is a selftaught, passionate mushroom expert and collector: “Since I was twelve, I have been fascinated by mushrooms and haven’t missed a single guided walk with experts from Luxembourg and abroad to expand my knowledge. I identify, document and photograph every mushroom species I find in our local forests. Every year, I taste new mushroom types and try out new recipes.
Sharing my knowledge with others has always been important to me, which is why I have been giving my own guided mushroom-picking walks for over 20 years”.

FRANÇOIS BESCH
«Visual Poetry» - The artist François Besch took the snapshots of this exceptional series of mushrooms at Roeserbann for an exhibition at the Galerie Clairefontaine* in Luxembourg city. Born in Esch-sur-Alzette and a pioneer of Smartphone photography, François Besch produced, in 2011, the first exhibition in the Grand-Duchy with photos that were all taken with the Hipstamatic application.

*Besch provides us with real visual poetry without the cold and blasé eye of a naturalist, but that of an astonished solitary rambler. (Extract of the review by Nathalie Becker, Luxemburger Wort, 23.04.2013).

THE HIPSTAMATIC APPLICATION is an application that takes digital photos and is only compatible with the iPod, iPhone and iPad. It uses the integrated camera to take photos and then applies various filters. These filters reproduce the effects obtained by older cameras, or those with design defaults. The final result depends on the choice of filters and settings. A selection of flashes and various other options are also available. All the photos in this stamp book have been taken by François Besch using this application.
