The Estonian History Museum is one of the oldest and most important memory institutions in Estonia. On February 2014 it will mark its 150 anniversary. The forerunner of the History Museum was the Estonian Provincial Museum that was set up by Baltic-German intellectuals in 1864. Today the History Museum, one of the country’s biggest state museums, carries out the important role of interpretation of Estonia’s past. The aim of the museum is to study, preserve and mediate materials connected with Estonia’s political history, particularly the period of independent Estonia.
