About Cars of Yesteryears

De DION-BOUTON, vis-à-vis, type D 1899

Following on from the series dedicated to church organs and professions of days gone by, POST Philately has launched a new charity series. Over four years, this series will showcase 16 classic cars which are registered in Luxembourg and motor across Europe to participate in events promoting classic cars. The stamps have been produced in cooperation with the “Veteran and Vintage Car Club of Luxembourg asbl”.

The De Dion-Bouton brand first saw the light of day in 1882, laying the foundations of the French automobile industry. In 1889, the Marquis Albert de Dion and Georges Bouton created the first internal combustion engine and, soon after, made it available to the general public. This car is a copy of the vis-à-vis, model D, with a tubular-type chassis and original factory bodywork which still has its identification numbers.

Produced in Audincourt, this automobile became known as the “Baby”, enabling Peugeot to establish itself in a new field for the brand. The 69 model was unique in that it used rack and pinion steering.

This car was discovered in the barn of a large farm in East Germany, just after the iron curtain was lifted. The car needed substantial refurbishment. After several visits to museums and extensive research, the car was finally fully restored in 1998.
