On January 1, 2015, Lithuania became the 19th EU member state to adopt the single EU currency the euro. Euro banknotes are the same in all countries, while each country makes its own design of the obverse of the coins. The national sides of the coins are used for depicting the national elements of the country, encircled with the 12 stars of the EU. Lithuanian national side of the coins depicts the Lithuanian national emblem Vytis. Its design was created by sculptor Antanas Žukauskas.
