Proclaimed in Vienna in 1965, the seven revised fundamental principles are contained in the statutes of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. Humanity: Born from the desire to help the wounded of the battlefield without discrimination, our Movement strives to prevent and alleviate in all circumstances the sufferings of men. It tends to protect life and health, as well as to respect the human person. It promotes mutual understanding, friendship, cooperation and lasting peace among all peoples. Impartiality: It makes no distinction as to nationality, race, religion, social status or political affiliation. It applies only to help individuals to the extent of their suffering and to provide priority to the most urgent distress. Neutrality: In order to maintain the confidence of all, the movement refrains from taking part in hostilities and, at all times, political, racial, religious and ideological controversies. Independence: Auxiliaries of public authorities in their humanitarian activities and subject to the laws that govern their respective countries, National Societies must nevertheless preserve an autonomy that allows them to act always according to the principles of the Movement. Volunteering: He is a voluntary and selfless Relief Movement. Unity: There can only be one Red Cross or Red Crescent Society in the same country. It must be open to all and extend its humanitarian action to the entire territory. Universality: Our Movement, in which all societies have equal rights and the duty to help one another, is universal. Guided by these seven principles, the French Red Cross works daily with the most vulnerable.
