Sir Walter Raleigh was one of the most important figures of the Elizabethan era, with a multi-faceted career which brought him to the island of Jersey as Governor during the years 1600-1603. During his time in Jersey, Raleigh appeared to have been very much a ‘hands on’ Governor, having a positive impact on island life. He improved the militia and the Island’s defences, fostering trade and attending sittings of the courts to listen to the debates of the local orators.
