After studying law, Henri Matisse eventually devoted himself to painting and joined Gustave Moreau's workshop in 1895. He took a close interest in impressionism, before adapting the techniques of pointillism, ultimately becoming the leading figure of the fauvism movement. In addition to paintings, Matisse also produced sculptures and drawings, as well as sets and costumes for the Ballets Russes de Monte-Carlo, including for the ballet "Rouge et Noir" by Leonide Massine depicted on the stamp. A major figure of the 20th century, his influence on American and German art was significant.
