About 100 Years of Murska Sobota Grammar School

The Grammar School (Gimnazija) in Murska Sobotastarted operating in 1919, less than two months afterthe region of Prekmurje was incorporated into Slovenia.

In historical terms, everything that happened aroundthe world in a particular period was re ected to some degree in Prekmurje. When there was friction in the world owing to religious a liation, for Prekmurje thismeant a division into areas where the majority of the settled population was of a particular faith, and even clashes between them. When there were world wars, the people of Prekmurje fought in di erent armies. Every political and economic system of government to which Prekmurje belonged had its local ardentsupporters and fervent opponents.

The present time in the European Union divides up thepeople of Prekmurje in terms of their developmental, economic and employment prospects and in terms of value comparisons between local and neighbouringareas. On the centenary of momentous events, thepurpose of issuing a special stamp is to reawaken an awareness, particularly among the people ofPrekmurje, that a true grasp of the nation-buildingdevelopments and an assessment of events in the world and at home can be found in connection with Murska Sobota Grammar School, which nurtures andeducates the most gifted and ambitious young peopleof Prekmurje in the Slovenian cosmopolitan spirit. Thisawareness had already matured 100 years ago.
