Rock coal was already being excavated on Disko Island by 1780. This was done at the previous settlement of Skansen. It was a tradition in this area that locals would take their own supplies for their stoves and ovens. The exploitation of coal was systemised from 1782 by The Royal Greenland Trading Department, in short KGH. This went on under the name of ’Ritenbenks Kulbrud’ at Gamle Qullissat, just south of where Qullissat is today on Disko Island’s northern coast.
