Born in New Orleans, Fides Devries wa a Dutch soprano who came from a family of opera singers. After stuydng in Paris, she made her debut at the Theatre Lyrique in Fromental Halevy's comic opera Le Val d'Andorre (The Valley of Andorra). She enjoyed resounding success at the Paris Opera from 1871. In 1883, she returned to the stage after an absence of several years. She sang four roles at the Monte-Carlo Opera in 1887, and three in 1889, when she made her final appearence as Gilda in Verdi's Rigoletto.
