About Lithuania Red Book, Birds

The Tengmalm's Owl, which lives throughout the northern hemisphere in coniferous, and less often in mixed, forests, is named after the special gentle humming that has been ringing in the forests since February – lu-tu-tu. It is one of the smallest and therefore probably the most mysterious owls in Lithuania. It is often squatting close to a tree trunk or lying in the hollow, and if it is flying, it is practically silent, so only the lucky few can notice this little bird. Like all owls, the dummy is active at night, and during the day it hides between branches of a tree or in a nest in a tree where 4-5 tennis balls hatch round eggs in mid-March. Due to its small size, this owl feeds on small rodents and small birds and, due to its rarity, is included in the Lithuanian Red Book.
