Barefoot in the sand.
In the “Sports”series, the focus this time is on ball sports. The ball is one of the most versatile pieces of sporting equipment and can be used for a broad range of activities by people of all ages and levels of ath/eticism.
Beach volleyball originated in the USA: it is claimed that the American George David Center first played volleyball on the sand in 1915 at Waikiki Beach in Hawaii and soon afterwards the first beach volleyball clubs were founded and competitions held in California. The game is played barefoot on a sand court; a team comprises two players.
Since the 1990s the sport has become increasingly popular here in Austria; the combination of matches and tournaments makes for a spectacular programme of entertainment. For twenty years Klagenfurt was the centre of the domestic beach volleyball scene, and it was here that Doris and Stefanie Schwaiger became European champions in 2013. In 2015, however, the Beach Volleyball Major Series was introduced, held in many European and American cities, including Vienna. The Beach Volleyball World Championships held on Vienna’s Danube Island in 2017 were a particular highlight, crowned by the Austrian pair Clemens Doppler and Alex Horst winning silver medals. Doppler has also been European champion twice, but with other partners. Beach volleyball is also a popular leisure activity — at many lidos you will find a sand-filled court with a net, and larger teams can often be seen playing on them.
