About Typically Dutch - Terraced Houses - Mint

This year, the Typically Dutch series focuses on house types and façades that are typical for the Netherlands. In this respect, nothing is more typical of the Netherlands than terraced houses. Out of 7 million homes in the Netherlands, 4 million are terraced houses. No country in the world has as many terraced houses as the Netherlands and three-quarters date from after 1945. The origin of this type of house in the Netherlands lies in the identical houses in the courtyards that were built from the end of the 15th century onwards. Since then, the terraced house has always been associated with social improvement, initially due to the charity of church communities, philanthropists or enlightened factory managers and in the 20th century due to the welfare state.
