Our military vehicles series began in 2018 with a commemoration of the RAF and continuedwith last year’s Royal Navy ships. In September 2021 we conclude this with stamps exploring British Army armour. The UK which invented the tank and was the first nation to deploy one in battle during the First World War. In factthe name ‘tank’ originates from concealing the early machines from aircraftunder giant water tanks. We have worked with the MoD and the Tank Museum in Dorset to identify eight veryinfluential British tanks and armored vehicles, from the most successful pioneering tank of world war I, through second world war and cold war vehicles, and to encompass different roles such as specialist bridge laying vehicles and reconnaissance light tanks. Britain has been at the forefront of innovation in tank design and engineering, with some designs exported to every country in the commonwealth. We will culminate with the brand-new Ajax class of vehicle which is currently being deployed. We depict these vehicles in a variety of settings and operations and show the evolution across a century of British innovation.
