About Melita Pivec – Stele

Melita Pivec, known after her marriage as Melita Pivec Stele, was born in Vienna in 1894. Her father was an officer in the Austro-Hungarian navy who was stationed in the city. She was one of the first Slovene women to enrol at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Vienna, where she studied history, graduating in 1919. Following the break-up of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, she returned to Ljubljana, where she passed the examination that qualified her to work as history teacher, although she never pursued a teaching career. She took employment as a librarian and at the same time continued her historical research. She was particularly interested in the period of the Illyrian Provinces, seeking out historical sources and publishing scholarly articles. Her articles covered a wide variety of topics including economic history, political history, the question of Christianisation and the history of convents. She was rewarded for her scholarly achievements with an international scholarship that enabled her to study in Paris, where she specialised in economic history. In 1931 she successfully defended her doctoral thesis at the Sorbonne – a comprehensive study that is considered the fundamental work on economic life in the Illyrian Provinces.
