About Masterpieces Of Art

"Booklet of 12 self-adhesive postage stamps at the green letter rate. The stamps are illustrated with details of masterpieces of art.

Stampbook title: MASTERPIECES OF ART - CLOSE VIEWS

Titles of the stamps: it takes the title of the notebook but in the singular "CHEF-D'ŒUVRE DE L'ART - VUE APPROCHÉE" to which is added the name of the painter and the title of the work of which we see a more or less large detail

This notebook is illustrated, as its name suggests, with 12 masterpieces of art, with a focus on bringing the gaze closer to faces. These works are of various formats, intimate or large formats, all kept at the Louvre Museum or the Orsay Museum in Paris. The details illustrating the stamps remind everyone of 'known faces', which they have seen in a school book, in a study of a period in art history, more or less immediately recognizable for everyone. Here, the detail of a self-portrait or of a portrait, either solemn, symbolic or allegorical, there, a face from a historical, epic, mythological scene, elsewhere still faces of people in a familiar, everyday scene. These portraits have well individualized expressions. The gazes of these people painted at different times intersect in the notebook, as if they were answering each other, questioning each other, beyond time...which creates a dynamic.

Two faces known in painting and philately are present in this notebook, both to illustrate commonly used stamps. One is the Sabine heroine Hersilie who interposes herself in David's painting ""Les Sabines"" between the Sabines and the Romans; she is the central face of the painting. The commonly used stamp representing it was put into service in December 1977. It was redesigned and then engraved by Pierre Gandon. The 2nd is the face of ""Liberty guiding the people"" by Delacroix, also redrawn and engraved by Pierre Gandon to illustrate the stamp in common use issued on January 4, 1982 and on sale until September 21, 1990.

Try to recognize the masterpieces from which these faces come! Guess the authors of these works! The title of the stamp gives the answers. But aren't we first of all in admiration of 12 exceptional talents?
