About 50th Days of National Costumes and Clothing Heritage

Nestled in the heart of the Kamnik-Savinja Alps, Kamnik is one of the most beautiful medieval towns in Slovenia. In the Middle Ages it was a flourishing trading town and a possession of the Bavarian noble house of Andechs. Its wonderful architectural heritage reminds us of the period when Kamnik was the capital of the March of Carniola. Today’s Kamnik is increasingly popular with visitors and attracts tourists from many parts of the world. They are drawn above all by its attractive medieval appearance and its interesting sights, of which there is no shortage.

Welcome to Kamnik, where you can discover the unknownand where every year, on the second weekend in September, tradition meets ethnology, culture and entertainment in a presentation of clothing heritage in all its rich variety. A spotlight is shone on this frequently overlooked aspect of history by a range of accompanying exhibitions and numerous performances by folklore groups from both Slovenia and abroad. The climax of the event is the traditional Sunday procession of national costumes, when more than 2,000 participants parade through the town in a colourful variety of distinctive outfits. The procession features traditional dress from various parts of Slovenia and also from other countries. The festival today known as “Days of National Costumes and Clothing Heritage” has been attracting visitors to Kamnik for over four decades and now draws crowds of more than 30,000 each year. Referred to by locals simply as “Costumes”, the festival is the pride of the town.
