Parasols are a particularly tasty delicacy and count among the largest and most popular domestic edible mushrooms.
The parasol (Macrolepiota procera) owes its name – it is also called the common giant parasol – to its shape, which is reminiscent of an open umbrella. The umbrella can grow up to 40 centimetres tall, it has brown scales and a small hump in the middle. An important distinguishing feature of the parasol is the sliding ring on the long, thin stem. This mushroom is native almost to the entire world and can be found in meadows and pastures, in sparse forests and on forest edges. The flesh of this mushrooms is white and tasty, with a slightly nutty flavour. The large parasol cap is often prepared like a cutlet, and the dried stems can be used to make spicy mushroom powder. There is a risk of confusion with other kinds of parasol-type mushrooms, but also with the poisonous tuberous-leaved mushroom.
