Peel Cars 50th Birthday Celebration

About Peel Cars 50th Birthday Celebration

To mark 50 years of the Peel P50 and Trident, Isle of Man Post Office is pleased to present a set of six stamps featuring the highly distinctive micro cars produced by Peel Engineering Company on the Isle of Man. Back in 1964 Peel Engineering were in full production of their unique P50 and later that year the first 12 Tridents were completed prior to the public launch at the Earl's Court Motorcycle Show in November that year.

The P50 was the first production car manufactured on the Isle of Man and was recognised as the smallest production vehicle in the world. Encouraged by the sales of the P50, Peel Engineering further developed it into a two-seater model that was known as the 'Trident'. These quirky kit cars feature on our set of six stamps affixed to a special edition envelope, embossed with the official logo for Peel Engineering's 50th anniversary, each hand numbered 1 to 500. Alongside the P50 and Trident, other micro cars produced at Peel Viking works are pictured, including the 'Viking Sport', BMC Mini, Manxcar and P100.

In 1970 Peel Engineering sold the company to employees and re-named as Western Marine. Around 55 P50s were built and it's thought that 28 survive today. Today around 30 Trident still survive. Fifty years on, these unique cars are now more popular than ever and the 50th Birthday Celebration will see the largest number ever return to the former factory in Mill Road, Peel in August.
