What do postage stamps and museums have in common? Both can show events from history, creating a connection to the present or even to the future. Like this special stamp, for example, issued to mark the 125th anniversary of the Landesmuseum.
Past, present and future: the commem- orative stamp highlights the develop- ment and architectural history of the Landesmuseum. Old and new stand side by side – rich in contrast and yet of equal value. The historic building, which opened its doors in 1898, constitutes one half of this spectacular ensemble.
To build it, young architect Gustav Gull intentionally combined architectural elements from different eras, such as the late Middle Ages and the modern peri- od. In 2016, a new building by Swiss architects Christ & Gantenbein was add- ed to Gull’s wing of the building, which is now listed as a historical monument.
It is home to large exhibition halls, a mod- ern library and an auditorium for public events. In the activities surrounding its anniversary, the Landesmuseum, re- garded as an architectural monument of national importance, is not only looking to the past but also to the fu- ture.
