About Sark

Sark is one of the Channel Islands and forms part of the Bailiwick of Guernsey, a British Crown Dependency. Measuring roughly 5.5 square kilometres, it is situated in the English Channel, south of Guernsey and west of Jersey. The island is accessible only by boat, with regular passenger ferries operating from Guernsey.

Sark is notable for its ban on cars—transport is limited to bicycles, tractors, and horse-drawn vehicles. It has a resident population of approximately 500 people and maintains a small-scale economy largely based on tourism, agriculture, and local crafts.

Historically, Sark operated under a feudal system led by a Seigneur until reforms in the early 21st century. Today, the island has its own legislature called the Chief Pleas, which governs local matters independently from the UK and Guernsey.

Sark is recognised as the world’s first Dark Sky Island, offering exceptional conditions for stargazing due to the absence of light pollution. It also has notable geological features, including La Coupée—a narrow isthmus connecting Sark to Little Sark.
