About Europa - National Archaeological Discoveries, Gobustan

From prehistoric rock art to musical stones, the ancient heritage of the Azerbaijani people comes vividly to life in the Gobustan State Reserve, home to over 6,000–7,000 ancient petroglyphs. These carvings depict scenes of daily life—people, animals, boats, dancing, hunting, camel caravans, and more—dating from 5,000 to 20,000 years ago, spanning from the Upper Paleolithic era to the Middle Ages.

In 2007, Gobustan was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. In 2013, the Gobustan Museum was named one of the winners of the European Museum of the Year Award (EMYA). Today, through the remarkable rock carvings, archaeological excavations, and paleontological finds, Gobustan offers a window into the lives of our distant ancestors, helping us imagine their world.
