About Krisjanis Valdemars
Krišjānis Valdemārs (1825–1891) was a leader of the First Latvian National Awakening. Born in a poor family, he studied hard and later helped form the “Young Latvians” movement. He encouraged Latvians to value their language, get an education, and learn seafaring. His ideas helped strengthen Latvian national identity.
