Following Queen Margrethe’s abdication in early 2024, it became apparent that Greenland should also have a new definitive stamp series to supersede the series bearing her portrait, which began in 2012. The portrait on the new definitive series should be of her son, King Frederik X, who ascended the throne on 14th January 2024.
The brand new definitive series has been created in collaboration with the legendary illustrator and engraver, Martin Mörck, who was also behind the latest two definitive series featuring Queen Margrethe. Based on the photograph by Steen Brogaard, the renowned photographer, who has been portraying the royals for many years, the stamp pays tribute to both the King’s dignity and the artistic tradition within stamps.
In accordance with tradition, the definitive series featuring The King’s Portrait will be continuously expanded with new denominations and colours. We are starting the definitive series with the denomination DKK 20.00, which is the postage rate for a surface mail letter up to 100 grams posted within Greenland.
The King and Greenland
Over the years, King Frederik X has built a strong and cordial relationship with Greenland, a relation- ship characterised by respect, affection and mutual understanding. While he was still the Crown Prince, he visited Greenland on numerous occasions and participated in both official and popular events. He has always met the Greenlandic people with warmth and genuine interest. He has often been accompanied by Queen Mary and their children.
The King’s involvement in Greenland extends far be- yond ceremonial duties. He has shown a deep under- standing of the Greenlandic cultural heritage and the challenges and opportunities of modern Greenland. When the King visits Greenland, it is not only as the head of state, but as a friend of the people. The King’s kinship with Greenland is a symbol of community and cohesion. His presence and interest make a difference and supports the positive cooperation that continues to create value for both Greenland and the rest of the Danish Commonwealth. The new definitive series is both a tribute to the King and a testimony to the strong, affectionate bonds between Greenland and our royal family.
