About Alicante Capital Of Gastronomy

This year 2025 Correos continues with the series of stamps commemorating the city chosen as the Spanish Capital of Gastronomy. This year the winner has been Alacant/Alicante.

Alacant/Alicante is living its year as Spanish Capital of Gastronomy as a unique opportunity to spread its recipes and typical dishes, its excellent product and the good work of the hoteliers of the city that have led it to position itself as one of the best places to enjoy around a good table.

The flagship of Alicante's gastronomy is rice, with its more than 300 varieties, which is, of course, the image shown on the stamp that Correos is launching on the occasion of the capital. It is curious to see how in such a small space as a postage stamp condenses the history and culture of a country over the years and for Alacant/Alicante is a real privilege that its gastronomy is present in the franking that will travel throughout Spain

Rice dishes are not only a typical Alicante dish but a faithful reflection of the way of understanding life, of our culture, of the way we relate and share, of the purest Mediterranean style, the heritage of a millenary culture. The richness of the sea and the orchard is transferred directly to the stove to savor dry and mellow rice dishes of such well-known varieties as “a banda”, “senyoret”, tuna and prawns or lean meat and vegetables, to name a few of the endless number of existing combinations. Without forgetting the “caldero de Tabarca”, a delicacy of one of our jewels, the smallest inhabited island in the Mediterranean.

The city also has a seal of quality, “Alicante, City of Rice”, which certifies that the rice served in the establishments is made following the proper preparation and with first class products.

But Alacant/Alicante is not only rice. Salted meats, cocas, fish, vegetables and greens are a fundamental part of Alicante's cuisine. A stroll through the centenary Central Market is a luxury for the senses. It is the place where a large number of homes, bars and restaurants of the city are supplied with an excellent quality in the product and in the treatment where you can also enjoy gastronomic experiences in its gourmet area.

In short, gastronomy is one of the best reasons to visit Alacant/Alicante along with its enviable climate, its light, its beaches and its cultural heritage. The city deserves a stamp and a visit, especially this 2025.
