Jenő Buzánszky, the legendary right-back of the Golden Team, was a highly respected figure in Hungarian sport and society, who received numerous prestigious awards, including the Saint Stephen Award (2007), the Prima Primissima (2010), the Sportsman of the Nation (2011) and the Human Dignity Award (2014). Nicknamed Kazal (meaning haystack), he wore the number 2 jersey for the national team 49 times. He became an Olympic champion with the team in Helsinki in 1952 and played in the “match of the century”, a 6-3 win over England in 1953. A year later, he was a permanent member of the team that won the silver medal at the World Cup in Switzerland. Buzánszky was awarded the freedom of the cities of Dombóvár, Dorog and Farkaslaka, and posthumously Királyhelmec, and was a dedicated supporter of Hungarians abroad and of youth sport.
After his playing career, Jenő Buzánszky continued his involvement in football as a coach. He began his coaching career mainly with lower-tier teams, where his main aim was to train youngsters and pass on his commitment to the sport. In 1961 he became head coach of Dorog Bányász, where he worked for a long time. He later became involved in youth coaching and performed a variety of sports management tasks. His work as a coach was highly respected, in particular for his educational and human approach. Throughout the decades, he has remained a symbol of sportsmanship and exemplary leadership.
Jenő Buzánszky was passionate about coaching and nurturing youngsters, and established the Ovi-Sport Public Benefit Foundation, originally called Ovi-Foci (Nursery Footy), in 2011. The Foundation is an exemplary initiative which both supports the movement, development and sporting activities of pre-school children, and has developed training for teachers to help achieve these goals.
The portrait on the label of the stamp is of the 27-year-old Jenő Buzánszky, while the special first day cover shows the outstanding sportsman in civilian clothes but playing football, based on a photograph taken in his later years. The imprint of the special postmark on the first day cover shows the logo of the Jenő Buzánszky centenary year.
