About Latvian Conductor Mariss Jansons

Mariss Jansons was a world-famous Latvian conductor known for his passion, precision, and deep connection to music. He was born on January 14, 1943, in Riga, Latvia, into a musical family—his father, Arvīds Jansons, was also a conductor.

Mariss studied music in Leningrad (now St. Petersburg) and later in Vienna and Salzburg. He became known for his powerful interpretations of classical composers like Tchaikovsky, Mahler, and Shostakovich.

He led some of the top orchestras in the world, including the Oslo Philharmonic, the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in Amsterdam. He was also chief conductor of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, where he earned worldwide acclaim.

Jansons was admired not only for his musical brilliance but also for his warmth and humility. He passed away in 2019, but his recordings and legacy continue to inspire musicians and listeners around the globe.
