In 2025 the Velenje Mine celebrates a remarkable milestone – 150 years of coal mining in Šalek Valley: a century and a half of perseverance, hard work, knowledge, development and the immense courage of generations
of miners.
The story of the Velenje Mine began in 1875 with the discovery of the first lignite seams, marking the start of
an era that shaped the economic and social development of the entire region. Coal brought work to Šalek Valley, homes to its people and energy to Slovenia, without which successful development would have been impossible. Thanks to its unique extraction method, the Velenje Mine has over the years gained international recognition.
Mining has always been closely linked to Šalek Valley, whose development may be said to have been built on foundations of Velenje lignite. The miners of Velenje helped build and shape what are today the modern
towns of Velenje and Šoštanj, while mining left a deep mark on the local community and its culture. The mining profession has always symbolised hard work, perseverance and solidarity. Generations of Velenje miners, through their courage and values, have helped shape the identity of Šalek Valley and left a legacy that is respected and cherished to this day.
As we mark this major anniversary, we look back with gratitude on their contribution and importance, while looking forward with a sense of responsibility to a future in which the valley will embark on a path of transformation and new opportunities.
