About International Inuit Day - New Flag day in Greenland

On the 7th November 2025 Greenland adopted a new flag day, following the official recognition of International Inuit Day as an important observance in Greenland. The stamp is created by Hari Kristoffersen, who is making her stamp debut. Chairwoman of the Inuit Circumpolar Council, Sara Olsvig, has sent us this greeting, which we have the great pleasure of sharing with our readers and collectors.

Celebration of Inuit unity and strength

“We ... are an international community sharing com- mon language, culture, and a common land along the Arctic coast... Although not a nation-state, as a people, we do constitute a nation.”

These were the words of the late Eben Hopson Sr.,
a visionary Inuit leader, who hosted the first Inuit Circumpolar Conference in 1977. To commemorate Hopson’s birthday, the Inuit Circumpolar Council (ICC) declared November 7th as Inuit Day, at its 10th Annual General Meeting in 2006.

Hopson’s words are as true today as they were in 1977. The Inuit remain united and strong in all aspects of life - from building self-determination to supporting and developing our traditional livelihoods. Together, we have endured colonial atrocities, but we remain steadfast and chart our own path.

As the world’s attention turns increasingly to Inuit Nunaat, our Arctic homeland, we have much to pro- tect and much to share. The Inuit are the keepers of knowledge about the ice, water, earth and all natural beings, with whom we have a deep relationship. We also bear a rich legacy of indigenous diplomacy and continue to insist on cooperation, peace and stability in our region.

On Inuit Day, we commemorate our enduring pres- ence in the Arctic since the dawn of time. We honour the deep bonds that connect us across national boundaries, our ways of life, and diversity.

As we mark the existence of Inuit Day for the twentieth time, we are proud that the day is being recognised as an official flag day in Kalaallit Nunaat (Greenland) for the first time. The Inuit Circumpolar Council welcomes this significant milestone. The issue of the Tusass stamp will remind us of this momentous event forever.

We are now joining with all Inuit across Inuit Nunaat and celebrating our unity and strength.
