The characteristic ceilings of Deichman Bjørvika in Oslo, Kunstsilo Kristiansand and Čoarvemátta in Kautokeino both surprise and invite to closer inspection. Deichman Bjørvika is Oslo's new main library, opened in 2020, and has quickly become an important meeting place. The building, designed by Lund Hagem Arkitekter and Atelier Oslo, is known for its characteristic folded roof, slanted atriums, and partially transparent facade. It offers flexible spaces for both quiet reading and creative activities. Kunstsilo Kristiansand is a former grain silo from 1935 that has been transformed into a modern museum. Architects Mendoza Partida, Bax, and Mestres Wåge Arquitectes have preserved the old silo tubes, which contrast with the bright exhibition areas. The building serves as a landmark and a preservation of local identity, offering spaces for exhibitions, a café, and education. Čoarvemátta in Kautokeino is designed by Snøhetta, 70°N, and artist Joar Nango. The building houses the Sami Upper Secondary School and Reindeer Husbandry School as well as the Sami National Theatre Beaivváš. The architecture draws on Sami traditions, with curved roof lines and visible load-bearing glulam structures. The building is used for art exhibitions, concerts, meetings, and education, creating a place where both locals and visitors can feel welcome.
