Brass music brings people together
From 14 to 17 May 2026, Bienne will become the heart of the Swiss brass music scene as it hosts the Federal Music Festival (FMF) for the second time.
550 brass music ensembles, 25,000 musicians, 2,400 helpers and around 100,000 music enthusiasts: this May, the Federal Music Festival will return to Bienne after 50 years. The event, which is held every five years, is one of the most important music festivals in the world.
Vibrant Bienne
For four days, Bienne will transform into a national meeting place extending far beyond the city boundaries. The festival aims to promote brass music, raising its profile and helping it to evolve. Bands are given a chance to perform, and talented young players are encouraged to show off their skills. But doesn’t brass music have a somewhat stuffy image? Michel Graf, vice president of the FMF26 Biel/Bienne organizational committee, disagrees: “Not at all. The record number of clubs and musicians taking part proves the opposite.”
Between tradition and transition
The first Federal Music Festival was held in the 19th century. Ever since then, it has symbolized tradition, community and Swiss culture. Over the years, various cities have played host to the event, including Zurich, Basel, Bern and many more besides. But the festival is also a showcase for the evolution of the genre: new forms of expression such as light music, street bands and youth ensembles are expanding the programme. “The festival offers much more than classical brass music,” explains Michel Graf. “Concerts at a range of venues and two outdoor stages highlight the cultural connection between brass music and other genres.”
Community and conversation
The festival has a special significance for musicians and conductors. It’s a place to meet old acquaintances and new kindred spirits a place that strengthens and forges bonds. And the conversation continues long after the four-day festival is over.
