About Year Of Local Newspapers

Both Glue and Magnifying Glass

In 2026, the Norwegian Association of Local Newspapers (LLA) celebrates its 50th anniversary, highlighting the vital role of local journalism. With around 200 local newspapers in Norway, and at least one in half of the municipalities, these papers are essential for informing citizens about local events, politics, and culture. In an age of globalisation, misinformation, and fast-paced media, local journalism offers a crucial safeguard against polarisation and abuse of power. While digitalisation has opened new opportunities, it also brings challenges and competition for attention. Many local newspapers have successfully built digital communities but still face economic and technological hurdles. Nevertheless, local journalism remains strong, fostering democracy, identity, and community engagement. Founded in 1976, LLA now represents over 110 newspapers. It advocates for fair press subsidies, professional development, and recognition of local media’s importance. In the "Local Newspaper Year 2026", their role as both glue and magnifying glass in local communities and the society will be celebrated.
