EL PAÍS celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2026, half a century of history that has unfolded alongside the most significant political, social, and cultural processes in Spain and Latin America in recent history.
On May 4, 1976, the newspaper was founded with the mission of accompanying a society in transformation and offering truthful, independent, and responsible information.
Throughout these five decades, its pages have witnessed and chronicled the great changes that have transformed our lives: the legalization of divorce, same-sex marriage, and the fight against gender-based violence, while adapting to the profound technological revolution that has redefined access to information. Throughout this journey, EL PAÍS has maintained a constant commitment to honest journalism, based on rigor, fact-checking, and the ongoing pursuit of truth. And, of course, a primary commitment: to the readers who read the newspaper every day, who demand more from it, and who make it better.
Along this path, the newspaper has also reflected its own evolution. That black and white printed newspaper has evolved into a growing network of editions, formats, and digital channels that connect with millions of readers worldwide every day.
EL PAÍS currently has seven editions, a strong presence on social media, and dozens of newsletters in text, audio, and video, always with the reader at the heart of its identity.
The 50th anniversary seal commemorates this legacy and symbolizes the continuity of a journalistic project that has adapted to each era without ever abandoning its founding principles.
