From protection to design
It’s simple, robust, reliable and has long been a sought after design object: the Swiss military blanket.
The military blanket is more than just a practical item. It’s a symbol of protection, solidarity and cohesion, a piece of Swiss cultural history. Whether as a bag, coat or cover for cushions, stools and sofas, the brown wool blanket with its distinctive red stripes can be found in mountain chalets and modern city apartments alike.
Now the blanket is adorning a stamp and honouring the 125th anniversary of military insurance (MI), Switzerland’s oldest social security scheme. For more than a century, it has been providing members of the armed forces, civilian service and civil protection with com- prehensive coverage if they are injured or taken ill in Switzerland or abroad. MI records around 50,000 new cases annually, from physical injuries to psychological stress. Suva has been managing MI on behalf of the Swiss federal government since 2005, as an independent social insurance provider with its own ac- counts and legislation.
Like military insurance, the blanket represents reliability and protection a subtle but enduring symbol of Swiss national identity.
