About EUROPA - 70th Anniversary of Europa

The Europa philatelic series celebrates seven decades of history, establishing itself as one of the most iconic and beloved issues for collectors worldwide. It all began on September 15, 1956, when six pioneering countries (Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands) launched the first stamps with a common design. That initiative sought to symbolize the reconstruction, peace, and integration of a continent still healing from the wounds of the post-war era.

Spain joined this project of unity in 1960, contributing designs that have since reflected our cultural richness and European commitment. Over the years, what began as a small group of postal administrations has blossomed into a network of 53 organizations coordinated today by PostEurop. Each annual issue, under a common theme, allows citizens to discover the hidden treasures and shared values of our peoples.

This 70th anniversary commemorates seven decades not only of cross-border mail, but also of the stamp's evolution as an ambassador of European identity. Throughout its history, Europa stamp issues have adapted to the times, integrating technological innovations and celebrating cultural richness through its popular annual competition. Seven decades after that first shared stroke, this series demonstrates that philately remains a powerful tool for strengthening ties between nations.

This year's stamp, designed by Klaus Welp, unites all the countries under a single motif: a composition of colored dots representing our connections, complemented by seven diagonal white dots, symbolizing seven decades of joint postal efforts. It is, ultimately, a tribute to the spirit of concord that travels on every envelope crossing our borders.
