The stamp series dedicated to the ‘Cities of the Air’ continues; it began in 2024 as part of a project to promote tourism and the local area, initiated by the association of the same name, which brings together Italian municipalities with historical, cultural, sporting or economic links to the aviation sector.
The star of the 2026 edition is the municipality of Codigoro, in the heart of the Po Delta, a unique area in terms of its environmental, landscape and historical characteristics, represented through two designs that bring together millennia of history and a contemporary vision. In this context, the landscape is not merely a backdrop, but an active element, capable of narrating a profound relationship between land, water and air. The first theme celebrates the Vallegaffaro Airfield, an infrastructure that today serves as a hub for light aviation and the region’s aeronautical activities. Set within a highly prized natural environment, characterised by the delicate balance between water and land typical of the Delta, the airfield demonstrates the ability to combine tradition and innovation, offering new opportunities for tourism, sport and cultural development. It thus becomes a symbol of dynamic modernity, in which flight is presented as an accessible experience and a means of promoting the region.
The second stamp is dedicated to the thousandth anniversary of Pomposa Abbey, one of the most important monastic complexes in medieval Italy, a place of spirituality, culture and innovation. Founded in the 10th century, the Abbey was for centuries a centre of extraordinary intellectual vitality, making a decisive contribution to the dissemination of knowledge and the development of Western music, thanks to the work of Guido d’Arezzo and the introduction of modern musical notation. Its solemn architecture, set within an open and tranquil landscape, continues to convey a sense of balance and contemplation to this day, offering a dimension which, whilst rooted in history, ideally resonates with the concept of elevation and the notion of flight.
