The kayak is one of the most powerful symbols of Greenland. For centuries, this streamlined vessel has been an indispensable part of coastal life, securing prey, connecting people and opening the path to new discoveries. Through the new stamp series The history and use of the kayak Tusass Greenland is focusing on this unique cultural heritage.
The series launches on 12th August 2026 and is planned as a four-part narrative. Each section highlights a key sphere of application for the kayak throughout the history of Greenland: Hunting, postal service, expeditions and sport. Consequently, the stamp issues follow a chronological development that shows how the kayak through generations has adapted to society’s needs while retaining its particular significance.
The first part of the series is devoted to the kayak as a hunting vessel. For centuries, the kayak was the hunt- ers’ most important tool at sea. With great skill and an extensive knowledge of nature, the hunter could silently move through the Arctic waters in search of seals, narwhals and other marine mammals. The kayak’s construction makes it possible to get close to the prey, whilst the vessel is light, fast and suitable for the often demanding conditions along the coasts of Greenland.
The complete series was created by Christian Fleischer Rex, who conveys this story with respect for both the craftsmanship and the culture from which the kayak stems. The designs highlight the kayak’s close connection to hunting and underscore its significance as a tool that was crucial for survival in the Arctic environment.
This new series opens an exciting chapter in Greenlandic stamp history. In the coming years, the next releases will follow the development of the kayak from a hunting tool to a postal vessel, an expeditionary partner and a piece of modern sports equipment. Altogether, the series will create a picture of a vessel that has been closely linked to Greenland’s history, identity and way of life for centuries.
The issue consists of two sheets, each with 10 identical stamps and an attractive souvenir sheet that includes both stamp designs. We look forward to continuing the series in the coming years.
