Combating poverty together
Caritas Switzerland has been committed to fighting poverty for 125 years. This commitment to humanity is captured in the commemorative stamp. Caritas Switzerland’s vision is a world without poverty. This humanitarian organization was founded in 1901 as a charitable organization of the Roman Catholic Church. Today, it works independently without any political or denominational affiliation. It is part of the international Caritas network made up of around 160 charitable organizations worldwide. In around 20 countries, Caritas Switzerland supports people in difficult life situations through projects and aid programmes, provides disaster relief and contributes to rebuilding efforts.

Poverty in Switzerland
In Switzerland, around one in 12 people live in below the poverty line. This often affects families, single parents, unemployed people or the working poor. Together with regional organizations, Caritas Switzerland is committed to alleviating or preventing poverty through numerous measures, such as counselling and educational services, Caritas markets or second-hand shops (find out more in the focus topic on the following pages). The organizations also provide help with asylum and integration, and support the elderly and young people facing difficult situations.
