100 Years of the Post and Telegraph Building in Zaragoza
Zaragoza’s Main Post Office Building Celebrates a Century of Service to the City
The iconic headquarters on Paseo de la Independencia marks its centenary, firmly established as one of Zaragoza’s most significant architectural, historical, and sentimental landmarks.
This year, Zaragoza’s Main Post Office Building celebrates the centenary of its inauguration. Since opening its doors on October 12, 1926, this landmark structure on Paseo de la Independencia has been an integral part of the city’s history, becoming one of its most recognizable buildings a symbol of communication, public service, and the evolution of Zaragoza itself.
Designed by architect Antonio Rubio, the building was created to accommodate the growth of the postal service during an era defined by the modernization of communications. Its construction reflected a commitment to monumental architecture, intended to convey the institutional importance of the postal service and the strategic role it played in early 20th-century society.
Architecturally, it stands as one of the finest examples of Spanish postal architecture from that period. Its distinctive exposed-brick construction enhanced by stone, ceramic elements, and meticulous detailing reflects a historicist approach, drawing clear inspiration from the Neo-Mudéjar and Aragonese Neo-Renaissance styles, both of which pay homage to the artistic heritage of Aragon.
The main façade, facing Paseo de la Independencia, is notable for its perfect symmetry and the monumental scale of its central entrance, framed by grand arches. Balconies, galleries, coats of arms, and exquisite artisanal ornamentation complete an architectural composition designed to project solidity, elegance, and institutional prestige.
Inside, the building features a large, square-shaped operations hall, inspired by Renaissance architecture and crowned by a spectacular stained-glass skylight that bathes the space in light. Designed to facilitate the intensive daily work of the postal service, this courtyard combines functionality and beauty, while the building’s layout separating public service areas from mail sorting and dispatch zones offered an innovative solution for its time.
Over the past century, the building has witnessed the transformation of communications and the profound social changes experienced by the city. Millions of letters, telegrams, and packages have passed through its facilities, making it a meeting point for individuals, families, and businesses alike. Yet, beyond its postal function, its walls have also safeguarded thousands of personal and professional stories stories that now form part of the collective memory of generations of Zaragoza residents.
The commemoration of this centenary offers an opportunity to recognize the building’s extraordinary historical, architectural, and heritage value, as well as the dedication of the people who, for a century, have worked within these walls, helping to sustain a service essential to the public.
To mark this milestone, Correos is rolling out an extensive program of commemorative activities throughout 2026, including exhibitions, lectures, the release of philatelic items, cultural tours, publications, and gatherings for current and retired employees. This program aims to bring this heritage closer to the public and strengthen the enduring bond between the building and the city of Zaragoza.
Celebrating a century of history is not merely about looking to the past; it is also an occasion to highlight the adaptability of Correos an institution with over three centuries of history that continues to evolve to meet the changing needs of society. The main Correos building in Zaragoza symbolizes this ongoing transformation and, a century after its inauguration, remains an architectural, historical, and emotional landmark for the city.
