About Flora - Dinarian Kandilka

This floral type is enriched with hortoestetic attributes, just like the remaining types of this interesting kind. But, the thing that makes it really special is the fact that it symbolizes as a genuine jewel of our vascular flora; it is the endemic kind of some mountainous masives of the Dinarida. Therefore it is found on the mountains of the «endemic centre of Herzegovina»: Prenj, Čvrsnica, Plasa, Čabulja, Vran, Velež, and on the near-by mountains of Visočica and Crvnja striking above the fields of Nevesinje, from where you could tell that the centre of its expandation is exactly on these mountains. It is found on some other croatian masives, where the northwestern boundary of its range is found, while the southeastern boundary is at some of the points of north Albania. Because of its specific exterior morphology, ecology and restricted range this species takes up a special place amongst the various types of this kind Aquilegia L.

In terms of the geological basis, this species represents a typical floral kind that responds to a lime-stone basis, because its optimal habitat is found in the cracks of the limestone cliffs, while it is rarely founded in the vegetation of limestone rocks. In the vertical sense its habitat is founded averagely in between 1.200 to 2.200 meters above sea level. It could be found individually or in small groups, and is part of a structure of endemic floral associations of a popular vegetation group Micromeria croatica, which was described by the famous botanist dr. Ivo Horvat (1897. – 1963.).

The dinarian kandilka entered botanic science more than 110 years ago, by which it was described by the famous austrian botanist G. Beck (1856 – 1931) , in 1891., who takes the benefits of the exploration of the Bosnian and Herzegovinian flora. Its classical finding site ( Locus classicus) is found on the mountains of Herzegovina Plasa, and Velež.

Aquilegia dinarica G. Beck, as a endemic and rare type of our rich and varied flora is founded on the list of endemic and rare floral types for the future « Red Book» of Bosnia and Herzegovi
