About World Meteorological Day

Meteorology, the science of the Earth’s atmosphere and changes in it, has now developed into a science that is very important for life of all humanity on Earth. The first book with a description and interpretation of weather phenomena was Aristotle’s "Meteorologica“ (340 BC). In the early 17 century the first instrumental observations began, and the main instruments for implementing those observations and measurements were the barometer, hygrometer and thermometer. The development of meteorology, and the possibility of its usage in everyday life, has inspired the formation of the first meteorological services and international cooperation.

The First International Meteorological Congress was held in Vienna in 1873, at which the International Meteorological Organization – IMO was established. IMO, in 1951 became the specialized agency of the United Nations – World Meteorological Organization – WMO, with the aim to enhance international cooperation in meteorological services. The task of World Meteorological Organization is the participation in organizing a network of meteorological stations to be used, in a unique way, for observation and measurement of meteorological elements and phenomena, then participation in organizing the system of rapid exchange of meteorological reports, organizing the scientific researches and assist in the application of meteorology to all human activities.
