World Orienteering Championships
Orienteering Celebration in Østfold
With the tag line “Run for fun”, the World Orienteering Championships will be held for the fourth time on Norwegian soil.
“A unique opportunity for orienteering both nationally and regionally,” said the president of the Norwegian Orienteering Federation, Astrid Waaler Kaas, after it was announced that Norway would be the host. She also said that a world championship competition with home-field advantage was particularly fun – and that it would provide extra incentive for Norway’s active orienteerers.
The event will be officially arranged by the Norwegian Orienteering Federation, but it will be the clubs in Østfold that will organise the orienteering celebration in Østfold’s forests.
Orienteering was invented by the Swedish military at the end of the 1800s. The first civil orienteering race was arranged in Norway in 1897 in Nordmarka, north of Oslo.
